Asava & Arishta are medicinal preparations made by soaking the drugs in a solution of sugar/jaggery. The drugs may be either in coarse powder form or in the form of decoction (also known as Kashaya). The mixture is stored under controlled conditions for a specified period of time during which it undergoes fermentation. The fermentation process generates alcohol, thus facilitating the extraction of the active substances contained in the drugs. The alcohol so generated also serves as a preservative which is why these formulations come with a long shelf life.
